WordPress theme

A set of server-side templates and assets that controls site appearance and can also influence page logic.

A WordPress theme is a set of server-side templates, styles, and assets that controls how a site looks and how some page logic behaves. In classic themes, PHP template files can run on every request, so a theme is not just a design layer: it can open files, process input, check permissions, and decide what content to show.

This matters in cyber security because a weakness in theme code can become a security flaw, not merely a display bug. Unsafe file paths can lead to arbitrary file reads, while missing capability checks can enable authentication bypass or unauthorized actions. Defenders review theme code for user-controlled includes, insecure file access, and weak authorization logic, and they patch or replace themes that handle privileged requests poorly. In practice, the theme layer is part of the attack surface whenever it processes trusted data on the server.
