Withdrawal freeze

a temporary block on sending assets out of a platform.

A withdrawal freeze is a temporary block on sending assets out of a platform, such as a cryptocurrency exchange. The platform may prevent customers from initiating transfers while it checks its systems, wallet controls, transaction approvals, or security alerts. A freeze restricts movement; by itself, it does not establish that assets were stolen or that a platform was breached.

In an incident response, pausing withdrawals can limit potential losses while operators investigate suspicious access or verify control of signing keys and wallets. It can also disrupt customers who may still see balances but cannot transfer them. Defenses include tightly managed permissions, secure key storage, monitoring, and clear procedures for suspending and safely restoring transfers.
