Wireless range

The area close enough to a Wi-Fi device for radio communication to occur.

Wireless range is the area in which a device can exchange radio signals with a Wi-Fi access point. Its boundaries vary with transmit power, antennas, walls, interference, and other environmental conditions; it is not limited to the rooms inside a building.

In cybersecurity, range determines whether an attacker must be physically nearby to interact with a wireless device. A vulnerability in a router’s Wi-Fi setup software, for example, may be reachable by someone within radio range even without the network password. Defenders should treat nearby wireless access as a real attack surface, keep router firmware updated, and avoid assuming that a strong password protects against flaws in the device itself.
