Widget instance

A saved copy of a WordPress widget’s settings and state.

A widget instance is a saved copy of a WordPress widget’s settings and state. Each instance stores the configuration for one placement, such as a calendar, search box, or recent posts block, so WordPress can reload it exactly as the site owner configured it.

It matters in cybersecurity because widget instances are not just display data; they are structured application state. If a plugin copies, serializes, or validates that state incorrectly, attacker-controlled input can slip into save or restore logic. In real attacks, weak widget-instance handling may be used to trigger logic flaws, object injection, or other unsafe code paths that lead to privilege escalation, file changes, or remote code execution. Defenders look for strict validation, safe deserialization, and careful handling of copied widget data to prevent these mistakes from becoming site compromise.
