A web tax is a digital tax applied to certain online revenues or services, such as platform fees, advertising income, or cross-border e-commerce activity. It is usually a finance and regulatory term, but it has a cyber security angle because the systems that calculate, record, and remit it depend on accurate transaction data, billing logic, and identity controls.
In practice, attackers may target tax and accounting platforms to steal credentials, alter invoices, or manipulate payment records so that liabilities are misreported or funds are diverted. Defenders treat web tax workflows as sensitive business processes: they lock down access, log every change, validate transaction sources, and reconcile data between storefronts, payment processors, and finance systems. As digital commerce grows, web tax also increases the value of compliance data, making it a useful signal for detecting fraud, account takeover, and tampering.
