VPN session

An encrypted remote connection that can be abused if trust checks fail.

A VPN session is an encrypted remote connection between a user device and a private network. It authenticates the user or device, then carries traffic through a protected tunnel so internal systems can be reached from outside the network. In practice, the session may expose internal apps, file shares, email, and admin tools, depending on policy.

VPN sessions matter because they create a trusted path into the environment. If authentication or trust checks fail, an attacker can establish a session that looks normal and then move inside the network with less friction. Defenders watch for unusual session creation, impossible travel or login timing, repeated failed logins before success, and internal activity that does not match the user’s role. Strong MFA, device checks, and tight logging help reduce abuse.
