A VPN configuration is the set of settings and credentials a device or user needs to connect to a virtual private network. It may include a server address, authentication details, certificates, encryption options, and routing rules. Organizations use these settings to provide remote access to internal systems over an encrypted connection.
In cyber security, exposed VPN configurations can help attackers understand how remote access is arranged and may enable access if valid credentials or certificates are also obtained. Malware that collects configuration files can therefore support reconnaissance or follow-on intrusion. Defenders should protect configuration files and authentication secrets, use multi-factor authentication, monitor VPN logins for unusual activity, and revoke or rotate credentials when compromise is suspected.
