Virtualization control plane

The administrative layer that manages virtual machines and host infrastructure.

The virtualization control plane is the administrative layer that manages virtual machines, hosts, clusters, and related settings in platforms such as VMware and similar hypervisors. It is where operators provision workloads, change permissions, apply policies, and control operations like power state, snapshots, networking, and migration.

It matters because control-plane access is highly privileged: if an attacker reaches it, they may be able to inventory systems, alter configurations, disable safeguards, or take over many virtual machines at once. Defenders therefore treat it as a critical trust boundary. Common protections include strong authentication, network segmentation, limited administrative exposure, logging, and rapid patching. In attacks, the control plane is often a high-value target because compromising it can give broad visibility and control over the underlying infrastructure.
