Viewing data

information linked to what content a device or user appears to watch.

Viewing data is information that indicates or helps infer what content a device or user appears to watch. It can include program or channel identifiers, viewing times, and records associated with content-recognition features such as automatic content recognition (ACR). Depending on how it is collected and linked, it may reveal habits, interests, or household routines.

In cybersecurity and privacy reviews, viewing data matters because connected devices may transmit related signals to services or manufacturers. Network monitoring can reveal that a device is communicating, but encryption may prevent observers from verifying whether the traffic contains viewing data. Defenders can compare network behavior before and after privacy settings change, while avoiding conclusions about data contents or retention without evidence. A visible opt-out is not, by itself, proof that collection or transmission has stopped.
