Version-specific update

A patch built for a particular operating-system branch or software build.

A version-specific update is a software patch intended for a particular operating-system branch, product release, or build. Different versions may require different update packages because they contain different code, support different devices, or follow separate maintenance paths.

In cybersecurity, applying the right update matters: installing a patch on one branch does not necessarily protect devices running another. Attackers may target systems left on older or unsupported versions, so defenders should track device models and installed builds, deploy the matching updates, and verify installation across the fleet. This is especially important in mixed environments where products receive updates on separate schedules.
