A version banner is a software version string or header exposed by a service, such as a web server identifying its PHP version. Security teams use banners to quickly identify technologies and flag systems that may need investigation or updates.
A banner is only a clue, not proof of the software currently running or its security state. It may be hidden, stale, or inaccurate, and fixes can sometimes be applied without changing the displayed version. Attackers may also use exposed banners to identify potential targets. Defenders should verify the installed and active runtime, check patch status, and update affected systems rather than relying on the banner alone.
