Utility sprawl is the gradual buildup of small applications and helper tools across computers. Each may serve a useful purpose, but together they can make it harder for IT and security teams to know what is installed, who uses it, and whether it is still needed.
In cyber security, unmanaged utilities can complicate patching, inventory, troubleshooting, and policy enforcement. They may also change how users interact with an endpoint or start automatically, so defenders should assess them according to the device’s role and the tool’s permissions and behavior. Maintain an approved software inventory, review new tools before deployment, and remove or update those that are no longer required. A utility is not inherently dangerous, but it should remain visible and governed.
