URL verification

Checking a link’s real destination before opening it.

URL verification is the practice of checking a link’s real destination before opening it. The goal is to confirm the final domain, path, and protocol instead of trusting the visible text, shortened link, or label shown by an app. Security teams use it to spot lookalike domains, hidden redirects, and mismatches between what a user sees and where a click actually goes.

It matters because phishing attacks often rely on misleading links that appear safe at a glance. A page may show a trusted brand name while the actual URL points to an attacker-controlled site, or it may route through one or more redirects before reaching the destination. Defenders teach users to hover, inspect, and compare domains, and they rely on browser protections, link scanning, and safe browsing controls to automate parts of the check. When platforms add wrapper URLs or redirect layers, URL verification becomes harder, so careful inspection is even more important.
