Upper stage

the final rocket stage that performs the last push to place a payload into its target orbit.

An upper stage is the final rocket stage that fires after lift-off to give a payload its last push into the correct orbit. It handles the most precise part of a launch: guidance, timing, engine burn, separation, and sometimes restart capability. In practice, this stage turns a successful launch into a usable mission by placing satellites exactly where they need to be.

In cyber security, the upper stage matters because it is software-driven and command-sensitive. A bad configuration, forged command, or corrupted flight script could change the orbit, delay deployment, or cause mission loss. Defenders protect it with authenticated command links, strict launch procedures, telemetry monitoring, redundancy, and separation logic that prevents unintended actions. In real operations, the upper stage is a classic cyber-physical target: the physical hardware is powerful, but the mission depends on trusted software and disciplined control.
