Updater

A component that checks for, downloads, and installs new software versions.

An updater is a software component that checks for new versions, downloads update packages, and installs them. It may run in the background, making it convenient to keep applications current, but it also creates a path for new code to enter a device.

Because an updater can install software, attackers may target it to deliver malicious code, especially if updates are not authenticated or the download channel is insecure. The risk is greater when the updater runs with administrator, SYSTEM, or root privileges, since a compromised update may gain broad control of the system. Defenders should keep software and update components maintained, verify update signatures and sources, monitor unexpected updater activity, and remove abandoned applications whose update paths are no longer supported.
