Trust path

A legitimate channel users rely on, such as a server-hosted download or update flow.

A trust path is a legitimate route users and systems rely on to exchange software or data, such as a download page, update server, package repository, or invitation link. Security depends on the assumption that this path delivers the expected content unchanged and from the expected source.

Trust paths matter because attackers often try to abuse the channel itself instead of tricking each user individually. If they compromise the server behind a trusted download flow, they can replace a normal installer with malware, inject a malicious update, or redirect users to a harmful payload. Defenses focus on reducing that trust: signed updates, file integrity checks, strong server hardening, access control, and monitoring for unauthorized changes. In practice, a broken trust path can turn routine maintenance or client onboarding into an endpoint compromise.
