Trapped-ion quantum computing is a hardware approach that stores quantum information in ions-electrically charged atoms held in place by electromagnetic fields. Each ion acts as a qubit. Carefully controlled laser or microwave pulses manipulate the ions and create interactions used to perform quantum operations.
This design can support precise qubit control, but building useful systems requires reliable operations across many qubits, along with control hardware and software. In cyber security, the term matters both as an emerging computing model and when these processors are offered through cloud services: access controls, job isolation, data handling, and service logs remain important. Trapped-ion hardware does not by itself mean current cryptography can be broken; security assessments should distinguish demonstrated capabilities from future plans.
