Transparent encryption

protection designed to stay associated with a file as it moves between systems.

Transparent encryption protects files without requiring users to encrypt or decrypt them manually. Depending on the system, encryption may be applied automatically and remain associated with a file as it moves between systems, such as from an insurer to a broker or cloud provider. Access controls determine who can use the protected data.

This matters because sensitive files can leave an organization’s network and enter partner workflows, where perimeter defenses no longer provide sufficient protection. In attacks, stolen or improperly accessed files may be exposed even after they are shared; file-level encryption can reduce that risk when keys and permissions are managed effectively. Defenders should verify how protection behaves across copying, processing, and storage, and review access and key management. Transparent encryption is a risk-reduction measure, not a substitute for securing the systems and accounts that handle the files.
