Transmission method

The channel or medium used to carry a signal from sender to receiver.

A transmission method is the channel or medium that carries a signal from a sender to a receiver. It may be wired, such as an Ethernet cable, or wireless, such as radio, infrared, or visible light. The method affects how far signals travel, what can interfere with them, and who may be able to observe or alter them.

In cyber security, the transmission method helps determine which protections are needed. Attackers may try to intercept wireless traffic, disrupt a signal, or exploit insecure communication protocols; a physical cable can also be tapped or accessed by an unauthorized person. Defenders choose suitable safeguards, such as encryption, authentication, secure cabling, and monitoring. For example, a remote control sends commands over a chosen medium, while networked devices transmit data over wired or wireless links. The medium carries the signal, but secure protocols help protect what the signal means.
