Transaction trail

the path money follows as it moves between accounts or services.

A transaction trail is the path money follows as it moves between accounts, payment processors, wallets, or services. Each step in that path can leave records such as timestamps, account identifiers, routing details, and transfer references. In cyber security, this trail is important because it helps investigators reconstruct where stolen funds went and identify the points where they can still be blocked, frozen, or reversed.

Attackers try to make transaction trails hard to follow by splitting funds across many transfers, using fast cash-out methods, or moving money through intermediaries. Defenders use the same trail to detect suspicious patterns, map related accounts, and coordinate rapid response with banks or platforms. The faster a team can analyze the trail, the better the chance of interrupting fraud before the money is withdrawn or converted into harder-to-trace value.
