Training data is the information an AI system uses to learn patterns, relationships, and outputs it can later apply to new inputs. It can include text, images, logs, code, tickets, or employee knowledge, depending on the model’s purpose. The quality, coverage, and labeling of this data strongly affect how useful and reliable the model becomes.
In cyber security, training data matters because it can contain sensitive or regulated information, and because bad data can break trust in the model. If attackers can inject misleading examples, they may cause data poisoning and steer the system toward unsafe or incorrect behavior. If defenders train on incomplete, biased, or poorly governed data, the model may miss threats or repeat operational mistakes. Security teams therefore track data provenance, access control, retention, and consent, and they often separate day-to-day operational inputs from data used for model training. Good training data governance helps protect confidentiality, reduce leakage, and improve detection accuracy.
