Traffic growth

the increase in data moved across a network over time.

Traffic growth is an increase in the volume of data carried across a network over time. It may be measured across a whole network or a specific link, service, or time period, using metrics such as bytes transferred or peak throughput. The measurement and period matter: more traffic does not necessarily mean more users, and comparisons need consistent definitions.

For cybersecurity and resilience, rising traffic can affect capacity planning, monitoring, and incident response. Defenders need to distinguish expected growth from unusual surges that may signal a denial-of-service attack, data exfiltration, or other suspicious activity. In telecom environments, traffic growth can also increase reliance on shared networks and multiple providers, making clear monitoring and coordination responsibilities important. Growth alone does not prove a security problem, but it can expose capacity limits or make anomalous activity harder to spot.
