Token freeze

A control used by some issuers to block transfers from specific addresses.

A token freeze is an issuer-side control that prevents tokens held at one or more blockchain addresses from being transferred. Some stablecoin contracts include administrative functions that let the issuer place an address on a blocklist or otherwise restrict its tokens. The exact capability depends on the token’s design and issuer.

In an attack response, an issuer may freeze tokens at addresses suspected of holding stolen funds, limiting further transfers or cash-out attempts. A freeze does not reverse a transaction, recover funds, or prove that an address is controlled by an attacker; it restricts movement under the issuer’s control. Defenders should treat it as a containment measure and coordinate with the issuer while separately investigating wallet control, transaction history, and any confirmed losses.
