TMS

transportation management system, software used to coordinate freight, carriers, and shipping records.

A TMS, or transportation management system, is software used to plan and coordinate freight movements, carrier assignments, shipping documents, and tracking records. In a logistics environment, it often becomes a central system of record for customers, routes, invoices, carrier profiles, and related business data.

In cyber security, TMS platforms matter because they sit at the intersection of operations and trust. If an attacker gains access, they may steal sensitive shipping and financial records, disrupt dispatching, or use the system as leverage in extortion. TMS data can also expose partner relationships and downstream workflows, increasing the blast radius beyond one company. Defenders reduce risk with strong authentication, least-privilege access, logging, network segmentation, secure backups, and careful review of third-party integrations and shared accounts.
