A third-party AI dependency is reliance on an outside provider for access to a model, AI processing, or continued operation of a service. It can include hosted models and the provider’s platform, APIs, data handling, and support.
This dependency matters because a provider may change its service, terms, or availability, disrupting business workflows even without a security breach. Exporting prompts, logs, and other data can help with recovery, but it does not guarantee that another model will behave the same. Organizations can reduce risk by negotiating clear data-export and exit terms, keeping representative test cases, revalidating workflows when switching models, and planning suitable fallbacks. Self-hosted alternatives may offer more control but require additional operational effort.
