Thermal path

the route by which electrical energy becomes heat in a component or material.

A thermal path is the route by which electrical energy is converted into heat inside a component or material. In a simple circuit, current passes through resistance, the part warms up, and that heat may change the component’s state, melt it, or trigger another physical effect.

In cyber security, thermal paths matter because many attacks and defenses depend on physical energy transfer rather than software logic. A high-voltage pulse through a filament, for example, can create a deliberate thermal path that destroys the element and causes an irreversible outcome. Defenders study these paths to predict failure points, set safe operating limits, and prevent unintended ignition, burnout, or thermal damage in hardware systems. Understanding where heat concentrates is essential for both safety engineering and tamper resistance.
