Testbench

A simulation environment used to check whether hardware logic behaves as intended.

A testbench is a simulation environment used to exercise hardware description code, such as VHDL or Verilog, and check whether the design behaves as intended before it is synthesized onto an FPGA or ASIC. Unlike the circuit itself, a testbench is not meant to ship in hardware; it drives inputs, watches outputs, and compares results against expected behavior.

Testbenches matter in cyber security because logic bugs in hardware can become reliability failures, data corruption, or unexpected control behavior. They help teams validate reset handling, timing assumptions, protocol interfaces, and edge cases that may be missed in manual review. In real development and defense workflows, engineers use testbenches to confirm that reusable IP blocks still work when integrated into larger systems, and to catch mismatches between simulation and real hardware behavior. Strong testbench coverage reduces the chance that faulty or poorly reviewed code reaches a critical device.
