Test server

a non-production system used to validate software or settings before deployment.

A test server is a non-production system used to validate software, patches, or configuration changes before they are deployed to live users. It may mirror production enough to reveal bugs, but it should be isolated and tightly controlled because it often contains operational details, sample data, or internal tooling.

In cyber security, test servers matter because they are common points of exposure. If network rules, identity controls, or environment boundaries are weak, a test box can become internet-facing and give attackers a foothold for reconnaissance or misuse. Defenders treat these systems like any other asset: inventory them, restrict access, monitor them for unusual traffic, and remove them when they are no longer needed. A system labeled “test” is not harmless if it is reachable from the public network.
