Telecom data is information held by phone and wireless providers, such as subscriber details, account status, device identifiers, call or text metadata, billing records, and support notes. It is sensitive because it can connect a person’s identity to a working phone number and to the controls used to manage that service.
In cyber security, telecom data matters because attackers can use it for account takeover, SIM swapping, social engineering, or impersonation during support calls. Even partial records may help bypass identity checks, reset credentials, or track a target’s communications. Defenders protect this data with strong access control, logging, staff verification procedures, and limits on what support agents can reveal. Treating carrier records as high-value operational data reduces the chance that a stolen record becomes a wider compromise.
