Technical root cause

the underlying weakness or access path behind an incident.

A technical root cause is the underlying weakness or access path that allowed a security incident to occur. It may involve an exposed service, a vulnerable application, stolen credentials, excessive permissions, or a misconfigured system. It is different from the visible effects of an incident, such as encrypted files or service disruption.

Identifying the root cause helps defenders stop an attack path rather than only address its symptoms. Investigators use evidence such as authentication records, endpoint activity, and network logs to determine how access was gained and what systems were affected. In ransomware investigations, a victim listing alone does not reveal the technical root cause; it must be established through evidence. Once confirmed, the weakness can be corrected, access revoked, and monitoring improved to reduce the chance of recurrence.
