The Tailscale daemon is the background service that manages a device’s participation in the Tailscale network, including its connections and network configuration. It may run with elevated system privileges so it can perform system-level networking tasks.
Because a privileged daemon can act with more authority than the user who requested an operation, its handling of requests is security-critical. In remote-access scenarios, features such as SSH forwarding may interact with local services or Unix-domain sockets. If a daemon performs an operation on a user’s behalf without enforcing the right boundaries, an authorized session could potentially reach actions unavailable to that user directly. Defenders should keep the service updated, review forwarding permissions, and limit access to sensitive local sockets.
