Supervisory System

A platform that monitors and manages field devices, often collecting status data and sending configuration changes.

A supervisory system is the control layer that monitors field devices and sends management commands. In operational technology, it gathers status data from controllers, sensors, and actuators, then displays alarms, trends, and device health to operators. It may also push configuration changes such as setpoints, schedules, and alarm thresholds.

In cyber security, supervisory systems matter because they sit above many critical devices and can influence an entire site from one interface. If an attacker reaches this layer, they may be able to change settings, suppress alarms, or disrupt visibility without touching every field device directly. Defenders focus on strong authentication, network segmentation, limited remote access, logging, and change control so that any unauthorized command is detected quickly. In retail refrigeration and other OT environments, compromising the supervisory layer can turn a local device issue into a broad availability problem.
