Supervision is the oversight function used to monitor banks and other financial institutions for safety, soundness, and compliance. In practice, supervisors review controls, risk management, capital, reporting, and operational resilience to make sure an institution is not exposing customers or the financial system to avoidable harm.
In cyber security, supervision matters because financial institutions depend on trustworthy systems, accurate records, and strong access control. Attackers may try to evade supervision by hiding fraudulent activity in logs, abusing privileged accounts, or altering data used for reporting and monitoring. Defenders use supervision to spot anomalies, enforce policy, validate model outputs, and confirm that sensitive systems such as payments and customer data are properly protected. Good supervision makes it harder for technical failures or intrusions to become systemic incidents.
