Sub-tier supplier

A supplier that supports your direct vendor rather than serving you directly.

A sub-tier supplier is a company that supplies your direct vendor rather than supplying you directly. In cyber security, this matters because your security posture can depend on organizations you do not contract with, audit, or even know about. A direct vendor may look compliant, but it can still rely on subcontractors for software development, cloud hosting, hardware parts, maintenance, or support.

Attackers often exploit these hidden links. If a sub-tier supplier is compromised, malicious code, stolen credentials, or tampered components can flow upstream into a trusted product or service. Defenders reduce this risk by mapping supplier dependencies, requiring disclosure of critical subcontractors, adding incident-notification and security-assurance clauses, and reassessing vendors when their supply chain changes. Visibility into sub-tier suppliers turns supply-chain security from a paperwork exercise into a practical control.
