Structured interview

a consistent interview format that uses the same job-relevant questions for each candidate.

A structured interview is a consistent hiring format that asks every candidate the same job-relevant questions, usually in the same order and with a defined scoring rubric. Instead of improvising with casual conversation, interviewers compare answers against the requirements of the role. This makes the process more reliable, reduces bias, and helps hiring teams distinguish real capability from polished talk.

In cyber security, structured interviews matter because many roles depend on precise judgment, not just credentials. A defender, incident responder, or cloud security engineer may claim experience with detection engineering, access control, or threat analysis, but a structured interview can test those claims with scenario-based questions and repeatable evaluation criteria. It also supports defense against risky hiring decisions, such as overlooking weak technical judgment or overvaluing familiar buzzwords. Attackers can exploit unstructured hiring by presenting convincing stories and hiding gaps in practical skill; structured interviews make that harder by forcing every candidate to answer the same concrete questions.
