Storage medium

The material or system used to hold information for later use.

A storage medium is the physical material or system that holds data for later use. It can be paper, a hard drive, flash memory, optical media, or cloud-backed infrastructure. In security work, the storage medium matters because it affects durability, capacity, portability, and who can access the data. The same information may be easy to copy from a USB stick, hard to alter on write-once media, or difficult to recover once a drive is destroyed.

Cyber attackers often target storage media to steal data, plant malware, or extract secrets from discarded devices and removable drives. Defenders use that same layer to reduce risk with full-disk encryption, offline backups, access controls, and secure disposal. In unusual systems, information may even be stored on non-digital media and later re-read or transmitted elsewhere, showing that security depends not just on the data itself, but on where it is held and how that medium is protected.
