Software environment

The collection of code, tools, settings, and systems used to develop or run software.

A software environment is the collection of code, tools, settings, libraries, services, and systems used to develop, test, or run software. It can include source-control platforms, build servers, deployment pipelines, runtimes, configuration files, and the credentials those systems use.

In cyber security, software environments matter because they often sit close to the software supply chain. If an attacker compromises a build or deployment environment, they may be able to tamper with code, steal secrets, alter releases, or disrupt service integrity. Defenders treat these environments as high-value targets by patching them quickly, limiting access, separating duties, and monitoring for unusual changes. In practice, security flaws in platforms like GitLab can put entire software environments at risk, not just one application, because the same tools that speed delivery can also provide a path to sabotage if they are weakly protected.
