A SOC analyst is a defender who monitors security alerts, checks logs and telemetry, and decides whether an event is benign, suspicious, or malicious. The job is a mix of triage and investigation: validate the signal, rule out false positives, gather supporting evidence, and escalate incidents when the risk is real.
This role matters because modern attacks often begin with noisy clues such as unusual logins, endpoint alerts, phishing reports, or network anomalies. A skilled SOC analyst connects those clues to context, separates normal activity from abuse, and hands off clear findings to incident response or higher-level security teams. In defense, strong SOC work reduces alert fatigue and helps organizations respond faster before small warnings become breaches.
