Smart city

an urban system that uses connected technologies to manage services and infrastructure.

A smart city uses connected technologies-such as sensors, communications networks, and software-to monitor or manage urban services and infrastructure. These systems may support transport planning, utilities, public spaces, or coordination during large events. Data can come from devices and operational systems, and may be aggregated to identify patterns such as how people move through an area.

Cybersecurity matters because city systems can expose sensitive operational or personal information if access, retention, or data collection is poorly controlled. In real deployments, risks include overly broad access to shared dashboards, weak separation between networks, and data that can be linked to individuals. Defenses include network segmentation, least-privilege permissions, limited data collection and retention, and clear rules for who can use the information. Connectivity can make city services more responsive, but governance determines whether the resulting data is used safely.
