Self-consciousness

Awareness of oneself as a distinct self, not just the ability to refer to "I".

Self-consciousness is awareness of oneself as a distinct self, not merely the ability to use words like “I” or describe internal states. In humans, it involves a stable sense of identity, perspective, and agency. In AI discussions, self-conscious language can be mimicked without any evidence of genuine inner experience.

This matters in cyber security because fluent systems can make operators over-attribute intent, confidence, or responsibility to a model. An assistant that says “I was wrong” or “I understand” may sound accountable, but that is still just generated text. Attackers can exploit this by prompting systems to appear more reliable than they are, while defenders should treat self-referential output as untrusted unless it is backed by logs, sources, or verification. The practical lesson is to separate persuasive language from actual capability.
