Security script

A small program built to perform a focused security task.

A security script is a small program written to carry out a focused security task, such as checking a setting, parsing logs, scanning for weak configurations, or automating a repeatable defensive step. It is usually narrower than a full application and is designed to do one job well. In cybersecurity, that simplicity matters because manual checks are slow, inconsistent, and easy to miss under pressure.

Security scripts appear in both attack and defense. Defenders use them to validate controls, collect evidence, and speed up routine analysis. Attackers may use similar small programs to probe systems, enumerate targets, or chain actions together. For that reason, a good security script should be reviewed carefully, handle input safely, and respect least privilege. The term is especially common in Python-based security work, where readable code makes it easier to move from a one-off task to reliable automation.
