Secure software development

Building security checks and controls into the development lifecycle instead of adding them only after release.

Secure software development is the practice of building security checks and controls into every stage of the software lifecycle, from design and coding to testing, release, and maintenance. Instead of waiting to fix problems after deployment, teams try to prevent them earlier with threat modeling, code review, dependency scanning, secrets detection, and secure build pipelines.

This matters because many attacks succeed through flaws introduced during development: unsafe input handling, exposed credentials, vulnerable libraries, or misconfigured deployment logic. Defenders use secure development to reduce those risks before code reaches production, while attackers benefit when organizations skip reviews or rush changes. In modern environments, automated tooling and AI-assisted remediation can help, but only if changes are still validated, logged, and approved. Secure software development is therefore not just about writing safer code; it is about making security part of the process that creates and changes code.
