Safety instrumentation

Tools used to detect hazards, support alerts, or improve situational awareness in dangerous environments.

Safety instrumentation refers to sensors, alarms, controllers, and monitoring software used to detect hazards and improve situational awareness in dangerous environments. In a shipyard, that can include camera analytics, proximity alerts, gas detection, equipment sensors, or dashboards that warn operators before a risky condition becomes an accident.

In cyber security, these systems matter because they are part of the operational attack surface. If an attacker tampers with sensor data, delays alerts, or spoofs outputs, workers may miss real hazards or trust false ones. Defenders therefore treat safety instrumentation as a critical control: it should be validated, logged, segmented from unrelated networks, and designed with human review and override in mind. Good safety instrumentation supports resilience; compromised instrumentation can turn a digital problem into a physical one.
