Risk Model

A structured way to estimate likelihood and impact for decision-making.

A risk model is a structured method for estimating how likely an adverse event is and how serious its consequences could be. In cybersecurity, models may combine information about threats, vulnerabilities, security controls, and potential losses to help compare risks and guide decisions.

Organizations use risk models to prioritize remediation, evaluate security spending, or express cyber exposure in financial terms. Their estimates depend on the quality and currency of the inputs and on assumptions about how events and losses are measured. Incomplete inventories or stale control data can make an output appear more precise than it is. Treat a model as a decision aid: understand its purpose, review its assumptions, and use the results alongside expert judgment.
