RFC 5424 is the syslog standard that defines a structured format for log messages, including fields for timestamps, hostnames, severity, facility, and optional structured data. It is widely used in logging pipelines because it makes messages easier to parse, route, and correlate across tools.
In cyber security, the standard matters because parsers and collectors must correctly handle its syntax. If a logging component mis-parses RFC 5424 input, attacker-controlled log lines can trigger crashes, memory corruption, or log evasion. That is why modules such as rsyslog’s structured-data parser are security-sensitive: they sit directly on the path for untrusted network input. Defenders should know which systems accept RFC 5424 messages, validate that parsers are patched, and limit exposure to trusted senders.
