RF (radio-frequency) observation is the monitoring of radio signals to identify what devices emit, when they transmit, and whether their behavior is expected. It can include detecting signal strength, frequency, timing, and interference using tools such as spectrum analyzers or software-defined radios.
In cybersecurity, RF observation helps defenders spot unexpected wireless activity, investigate interference, and check whether a device’s emissions match its intended role. This matters when software can change a device’s radio behavior: a familiar hardware label may not reveal what it is transmitting. In practice, teams can compare observed signals with approved configurations and investigate anomalies, alongside firmware and device-inventory checks.
