Restore path

The process and tooling used to recover files from a backup copy when data is lost or damaged.

A restore path is the process and tooling used to bring files back from a backup after data is lost, deleted, corrupted, or encrypted. It includes the backup source, the recovery method, and the steps needed to return data to a usable state.

In cyber security, the restore path is just as important as the backup itself. A backup that cannot be restored is not a real defense against ransomware, hardware failure, or accidental deletion. Attackers often target backup systems because breaking recovery increases pressure on victims to pay or give up. Defenders therefore test restore paths after patches, configuration changes, and incident response drills to confirm that recovery still works. In practice, this means verifying access to backup media, checking integrity and retention, and running restore tests to make sure recovery is fast, complete, and trustworthy.
