Replication software

Tools that copy data or virtual machine state to another system for backup or recovery purposes.

Replication software copies data, disk images, or virtual machine state from one system to another so a backup or standby copy is available for recovery. It is used in disaster recovery, high availability, and backup workflows, where fast restoration matters more than manual re-creation.

In cyber security, replication software is important because it often handles sensitive data and trusted infrastructure paths. If an attacker reaches the management interface, they may try to delete replicas, alter synchronization, or use the software’s privileges to move laterally and disrupt recovery. Defenders treat these tools carefully: they isolate admin access, restrict reachable services, monitor replication jobs, and patch promptly. A weakness in replication software can be especially damaging because it does not just affect one server; it can weaken the organization’s ability to restore systems after ransomware, outages, or data corruption.
