Remoting

The communication layer Jenkins uses to move work between the controller and build agents.

In Jenkins, Remoting is the communication layer that carries work between the controller and build agents. It lets the controller send tasks, receive results, and coordinate distributed builds as if the agent were an extension of the main system.

Security-wise, Remoting is a trust boundary. The controller often holds credentials, pipeline logic, and orchestration power, while agents execute remote work. If that channel is weak, an attacker with agent access, or a malicious agent, may try to influence what the controller accepts. Defenders care because flaws in Remoting can lead to command execution, job tampering, or secrets exposure. Hardening this layer means strict permission checks, careful handling of serialized data, and keeping controller and agent components patched.
