Remote onboarding

hiring and provisioning a worker without in-person verification.

Remote onboarding is the process of hiring, verifying, and provisioning a worker without meeting them in person. It usually includes identity checks, contract paperwork, account creation, device delivery, and access setup through email or video calls. In cyber security, this matters because every step is a chance to admit a real employee or an impostor.

Attackers can abuse remote onboarding by using stolen documents, synthetic identities, voice or video impersonation, or mismatched banking details to get accounts, devices, or internal access. Once inside, they may collect intelligence, plant malware, or move toward higher-value systems. Defenders use stronger identity proofing, device attestation, least privilege, and review of unusual payment or location data to reduce this risk. Good onboarding is therefore part of access control, not just human resources.
